return from the depths of dust

once again burningman didn't disappoint with surprises, adventures, and dust.
Jess and I were flown onto the playa by our pilot friends, larry and kathy

the playa from the air, eventually holding over 49,000 people

getting through security at the port of entry
our camp, home sweet home. you need tents inside tents to keep dust at bay
our flame-throwing car, flo
our Boiseian friend's "altitude lounge', set up high on scaffolding

wheeeee!

nothing can be bought, sold, or promoted at Bman but ice and coffee. Thus, you either bring, gift, or receive. Most people have something to share, like pink jelly bellies

barbie deathcamp and wine bistro, served up yummy white wine, and if you bring a barbie, you get to chose the method of death. judi donated hers and chose hanging. looking back, she wishes she'd chosen the oven.
kramer pouring beers off of our art car during a parade after-party

this was an amphibious vehicle turned into a duck with a mirror-ball head, flaming mohawk, dance cage, and eyes that shot lasers. that's the quadrafecta of art cars in my book. it was one of the thousands of art cars built just for the heck of it, transporting people from place to place

this was a huge teeter totter, they're not really kidding
here it is in daylight, see, told you it was big
chris my fabulous gear sherpa!
the flaming lotus girls are san fran chicks who weld gigantic metal flame-emitting sculptures every year, they are interactive, you push buttons to make the flames shoot, and the leaves move. there were 9 'plants' growing in size from seedling to huge
this structure was a hoot in big wind. it's some sort of statement to this years "american dream" theme
view from the temple to the man

same view, with dust. storms pop up quickly

every day is a day at school
each year a temple is built for people to post memorials. it is burned in a big ceremony, allowing mourners to be 'cleansed' of their burdens. i saw a lot of memorials to cats this year, and a lot of "cancer sucks" stickers. it is a sobering experience, and one of the better things to witness. after a few hours of reading, you realize we all have similar sorrows, and that none of us is an island unto ourselves.

temple from inside, built from all re-used, recycled materials... doorknobs, bedsteds...

gary, his bro bryan, and girlfriend super

there were 7 if these metal sculptures that depicted major world religions. and they emitted fire at night (of course)
one of the them emitting fire at night - sky view

we handed out creamcicles and orange pop at the 'deep end' club. icy treats were very well received given the high temps
another club, the "root society", had trapeze artists suspended from the dome
this was a great interactive art piece. at night he was filled with burning logs, then people 'teeter tottered' on the legs to make him bounce back and forth, causing embers to shower about through the mesh metal body. when it got super hot, his hat whistled like a teapot.

lamplighter volunteers, attempting to light the streetlamps in the middle of a dust storm
some of our crew helped build the largest club on the playa, the "opulent temple', thousands thumped to techno each night. this is a few of the scaffolding level
a view of the stage from the scaffolding, the dj just hit the button to make the flame throwers emit balls of fire, mmmm, fire
hippie oven, cooking up gifts of chocolate chip cookies, mmmm
a shooting gallery, but you fired flame throwers instead of guns

reverend uncle sticky does another wedding, this couple is from boise, and met the previous year at burningman. the tule skirt lisa made for me was used as her veil.

this mechanical hand would pickup and crush this car, by the end of the week, the car was unrecognizable
